DEHYDRATING AGENT (noun)

 

Any substance that will remove water from another substance.

Example: powdered anhydrous NaSO₄, when added to an organic liquid that contains water, will form solide clumps of hydrated NaSO₄ as it locks away the water molecules. Filtration of this mixture will yield a water-free (dried) organic liquid.
