EQUILIBRIUM
CONSTANT (noun)
Abbreviated
as "K." The number obtained from the equilibrium
expression of a reaction in equilibrium.
If K>1, then the equilibrium concentrations of the products are greater
than the equilibrium concentrations of the reactants, and the forward reaction
is said to be favoured. If K<1, then the equilibrium concentrations of
the reactants are greater than the equilibrium concentrations of the products,
and the reverse reaction is said to be favoured. If K=1, then neither direction
of the reaction is favoured over the other one.
