The substance
in a chromatography
experiment on which the chemical mixture is being separated (eluted).
Examples:
in paper chromatography, the paper is the stationary phase. It is dipped into
a solvent (the carrier
phase). In column chromatograpy, the stationary phase is usually
silica gel. The solvent is poured on top of the column of silica gel.
