Jason Hein received his B.Sc. in biochemistry at the University of Manitoba in 2000. In 2005, he completed his Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry as an NSERC PGS scholar under Professor Philip G. Hultin at the same institution. He then moved to the Scripps Research Institute as an NSERC postdoctoral fellow supervised by Professors K. Barry Sharpless and Valery V. Fokin. In 2010, he became a senior research associate with Professor Donna G. Blackmond at Scripps. He began his independent career at the University of California, Merced in 2011 where his work focused on employing in situ kinetic reaction analysis as a means to rapidly profile and study complex networks of reactions. In 2015, he moved to the University of British Columbia to continue the development of reaction analytical techniques to further mechanistic organic chemistry.

Born and raised in Dubai, I moved to Montreal to obtain a B. Sc (Hons) in Biochemistry at McGill University, where I worked in the research group of Professor Youla Tsantrizos. In 2014, having witnessed a sufficient amount of snowfall, I headed west to join the group of Professor Jennifer Love at UBC to pursue my PhD. In the Love group, I studied the fundamental organometallic reactivity of nickel complexes. After graduating in 2019, I moved all the way down the hall to join the Hein lab as a Mitacs PDF in collaboration with NOVA Chemicals.
I completed an undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Prince Edward Island. I then moved to Ottawa and joined the Beauchemin lab for my PhD where I helped develop novel synthetic transformations of nitrogen containing compounds. I joined the Hein group in June 2019 where I now focus on combining my synthetic organic chemistry background with continuous preferential crystallization. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, camping and working out.
I completed my PhD at the University of Victoria under the supervision of Robin Hicks where I studied the redox chemistry of organic radicals bound to palladium. I then moved to the University of British Columbia for a postdoctoral fellowship in organometallic chemistry with Mike Fryzuk. I joined the Hein group in 2021 as a postdoctoral fellow. My research focuses on continuous preferential crystallization of high purity lithium carbonate for the battery industry. In my spare time, I enjoy cycling, hiking, and pretty much anything outdoors.
I completed my PhD at the University of Victoria under the supervision of Scott McIndoe. My research focus was the elucidation of organometallic reaction mechanisms using continuous online monitoring by mass spectrometry. I joined the Hein group in September 2017 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and have transitioned to a Research Associate working to integrate automation tools into our workflow. In my spare time I like to mountain bike, scuba dive, and play computer games.
I completed my PhD in Art History at the University of California San Diego where I studied data visualization. I am interested in finding unique ways to visualize and analyze large amounts of information using interdisciplinary methodologies. Outside of the lab, you can find me training for triathlon or experimenting with cooking.
After completing my B.Sc. in the field of Biochemistry, I pursued the more chemistry-based side of it in my M.Sc. Medicinal and Natural Product Chemistry at the Leibniz University Hanover, Germany. In my last year, two colleagues of mine introduced me to the field of automation in chemistry, which ultimately led me to the HeinLab in 2021. In my time off I like to read (mostly Sci-Fi), listen to/make music or engage in any kind of sporting activity.
After receiving my master’s degree in Chemistry from American University, I joined Schering Plough Research Institute, where I developed synthetic routes for drug candidates. A few years later, I moved to the Catalysis and Automation group at Merck, where I shifted my focus to the development of high throughput automation and data rich experimentation capabilities to support process development. I joined the Hein lab in January 2019 and am interested in developing custom automation systems as well as implementing machine learning capabilities to accelerate pharmaceutical process development. In my spare time I practice yoga as often as possible, with some mediation sprinkled in. I also really enjoy food, wine, live music, friends, family and quality time with my husband John.
I completed my B.S. in Biology at the University of Portland in 2017, and began my graduate studies at the University of British Columbia in 2018. I’m interested in process chemistry and organic synthesis. I find great satisfaction in the process of optimization and love the combination of empirical knowledge and creativity inherent in synthetic chemistry. In my spare time, I enjoy running and skiing.

I was born and raised out east in Ottawa, where I completed my undergraduate degree. It was there that I found my love for chemistry research working under Prof. Stephen Newman. I then joined the Hein lab in 2020 to pursue my MSc in the areas of continuous flow synthesis and reaction monitoring. In my spare time, you can usually find me listening to music, cooking, or playing video games.
I completed my B.Sc. at the University of Waterloo in the Honours Co-operative Chemistry Program in 2019, during which time I worked for various professors at UWaterloo and for various companies and discovered my love of research. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry as part of the Hein group. In my free time I enjoy good stories (books and movies especially) and experiencing nature.
I completed my undergraduate degree nearby at the University of Victoria where began my research career working on the development of novel transition metal catalysts with Prof Lisa Rosenberg. I’m interested in the development of autonomous labs, particularly with a focus on developing new tools to better understand reactions with complicated mechanism. Out of the lab I’m an aspiring gardener (from my small apartment balcony) and big book lover.
PhD Student
I completed my Bachelor’s degree in the field of chemistry as a collaboratively educated student, I spent 2 years in Tianjin University, China; and the other two years in the University of Waterloo, respectively. Then I joined Hein’s lab in 2018 as a MSc student. My interest is organic synthesis and my goal is to become a skillful synthetic chemist who has a map of reactions in their head. In my spare time, I am very interested in politics and sketching.
It was at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) that I obtained my Chemistry B.Sc. with honors and conducted research in the marine natural products lab of Dr. Phillip Crews. In the Crews lab, I isolated, purified, and structurally characterized three potentially bioactive molecules from a sponge collected in the South Pacific. After graduating, I served as a member of the structure elucidation group in the Small Molecule Analytical Chemistry department at Genentech’s South San Francisco campus. It was under the expert tutelage of group members Dr. Sarah Robinson, Dr. Kenji Kurita, and Dr. David Russell that I truly gained a deep appreciation for which both NMR and HRMS could be applied to answer complex chemical questions. I hope to further apply and build this understanding, with NMR in particular, to investigate and better understand the reactions these organic molecules undergo. In my free-time I enjoy exploring the outdoors, whether it be above or below the water.

I was born and raised in Kyoto, one of the most traditional cities, in Japan. I completed my undergraduate studies at University of Shizuoka, during which I greatly enjoyed spending time under the direction of Prof. Kei Manabe where I worked on developing a reaction with novel directing triphenyl phosphine ligands. Now I monitor reactions with an automated HPLC sampler and React IR in the Hein group. Outside of the lab, I enjoy skating, conversation and working out.

I completed my Master of Philosophy degree in the field of catalytic asymmetric halogenation reactions at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, under the supervision of Prof. Yeung Ying Yeung. Then I joined the Hein lab to pursue my PhD degree. Out of the lab I enjoy movies, cooking and working out.
BSc Student
I am a 4th-year Chemistry student at the University of British Columbia. I’m particularly interested in organic synthesis and in understanding reaction mechanisms, but I’m also intrigued by interdisciplinary studies involving chemistry. In my free time, I enjoy painting and playing video games.
I completed my BSc in Chemistry at UBC. While working for Dr. Hein in my fourth year I was introduced to automation and robotics which inspired me to pursue my BASc in Mechanical Engineering specializing in Mechatronics. I am interested in the integration of hardware and software to achieve precision movements and controls. In my spare time I enjoying making 3D printable trinkets and tools for other members of the Hein Lab.
BSc Student
I am a third year combined Honours student in Chemistry and Mathematics at the University of British Columbia. I did research on radical polymer and organic magnet in the University of Toronto with Dr. Dwight Seferos in 2019’s summer. I enjoyed the programming portion in my mathematics study and can’t wait to see what it can bring to my chemistry life! Outside of the lab, I like listening and playing music. I can play the piano, acoustic and electric guitar. I am also the electric guitarist of the band in my church!
I completed my BSc in Chemistry at UBC and Management of Technology MBA at SFU Beedie School of Business. I’ve worked across a number of sectors in industry and academia, from wood science to biofuels, to safety management in academia. In my spare time, I enjoy learning as much as possible about materials science, economics, psychology, and history.
Abandoned as a pup on the mean streets of Merced, California, I had a tough start in life. My curiosity, playful spirit, and desire for affection were unfulfilled and my outlook was bleak… until one exceptional Beagle Basset Hound, Crambley, changed everything. Crambley adopted me as one of her own, nurturing me to overcome my trauma. I then came to Vancouver to jump-started my career as the Morale Officer for university research programs. I now bark, snooze, and thrive in the Hein Lab, where I support students, scientists, and friends of the group through all the challenges of life.
Born and raised in Berkeley, California, I moved to Vancouver for my BA. I completed my BA, double majoring in Cultural Anthropology and Linguistics. I enjoy learning about the ingenuity of human communication, how we distinguish ourselves as individuals and communities, and the ways in which the two are interconnected. In my free time, I enjoy trying new foods, hiking, and scuba diving (when I’m lucky enough to have both the time and funds).
I completed my BSc in Chemistry at UBC, during which I first joined the Hein Lab as an undergraduate researcher. I am interested in artificial intelligence, automation, and the field of human-computer interaction, and developing tools for researchers. I love music and going to concerts (my favourite genre is symphonic metal), and in my spare time I enjoy cooking and learning wing chun.
Since starting my career, I’ve worked in instrument service, bio-energy research and academic settings always gravitating toward instrument application, method development and troubleshooting. I enjoy having a mix of hardware, software and chemistry problems to work on, such as solving analytical challenges, troubleshooting instrumentation, or re-purposing and re-configuring existing equipment. I’m also interested in programmatic instrument control, as well as new machine learning applications.
I’m a science communicator and project manager with a background in chemistry. I completed my BSc at UBC exploring a wide breadth of chemistry topics, from biomedical imaging and pharmaceuticals, to clean energy technologies like solar cells. Today, I love mobilizing knowledge between academia, industry, government, and the general public. To keep things interesting, I also moonlight as a teacher of acrobatic yoga.
I recently graduated with a M.Sc. from Simon Fraser University in physical chemistry and organic electronics. I have always enjoyed mathematics, algorithms and coding and in the Hein lab I get to combine that with my chemistry background for automation of lab processes. In my free time, I am a salsa dancer, either social dancing or preparing for a performance.
