Enthusiastic and highly motivated students who are interested in graduate studies (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) should send a cover letter, CV, and unofficial transcript to Prof. Algar in .pdf format (Word documents will not be opened). Please note that students must apply for admission directly through the Department of Chemistry. The availability of graduate student positions is variable and depends on current funding, the current group size, and calibre of the candidate.
Undergraduate opportunities are also available, whether through summer fellowships (e.g. NSERC USRA, UBC SURS), thesis projects for credit (e.g. CHEM 449), international internships, or volunteer positions.
Postdoctoral applicants with funding are welcome to apply. Applications should include a CV, cover letter, and contact information for 2-3 references. The onus is on the applicant to demonstrate that their experience and expertise will be an asset to the Algar Research Group specifically. Only qualified applicants will be contacted.

The Algar Research Group works at the interface of bioanalytical, physical, and materials chemistry. Based in the Chemistry Department at the University of British Columbia, we develop luminescent materials such as quantum dots, polymer dots, and lanthanide complexes as components of novel point-of-care diagnostics, cellular probes, and other forms of bioanalysis. We have expertise in fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging, as well as the characterization andapplications of nanoparticles. Our research objectives include new tools for biomedical research and new technologies for the delivery of health care.
